The Promise

Many many many months (forever) ago I was driving in my car, enjoying the sweet sounds of XM Satellite Radio.  Casually making my rounds through the usual stations I landed on the Top 20 on 20.  Naturally, they play the top 20 most requested songs.  I parked my dial here for a bit.  Well, on came a catchy song titled "This Love" by Maroon 5.  At first listen, I enjoyed the song, it was very catchy and easy to sing along to.  Apparently the rest of the world felt that way also.  After that day, the song abused me at every opportunity.  After about a week I started to hate it, and in turn, it turned me off to everything that is Maroon 5.  I made a promise to myself that the day I didn't hear "This Love" at least once on the radio, I would write about it.  Well folks, that day has finally arrived.  I successfully made it through yesterday without that song ruining my day.  I've lost count of how many months have gone by since I made that promise to myself, but it sure feels good to know that "This Love" might be slowly exiting the airwaves and my life.  I went to Italy for two weeks back in June, I thought I'd escape it for sure.  Wrong.  Very wrong.  Within 20 minutes of driving our new rental car from Milan to Turin, sure enough, on came Maroon 5.  In Italy.  I was sickened...all the way back to the U.S.

Throughout this phase of radio hell, I'd overhear people (mostly girls) saying things like "they [Maroon 5] are in my top 5 bands of all time, in fact, they're probably my number one" or, the ever present, "Oh my God, I love Maroon 5, they are so hot."  Apparently being hot means you make gold records.  False.  It means you make crappy, redundant, radio-style, day-ruining, pop garbage which happens to go gold because every pre-teen with a cable modem loads up the 20 on 20 website and votes for your songs over and over.

You're probably saying to yourself, "hey, Matt, don't listen to the pop station."  Yeah, I'm not an idiot.  I tried that.  I've even had it come on three different stations in a row.  And besides, I like some pop songs.  Just not this one.

If the radio isn't enough, their video makes me cringe.  If the cheesy lyrics don't make you throw-up in your mouth on their own, you get to see them sporting sweet, wannabe rock star clothing in the "I'm trying hard to look like I didn't try hard" look all while pseudo humping half-naked chicks.  I guess the girl in the video is "this love" that he just can't seem to keep coming every night.  Hey, maybe that's because you're a total stroke.  Shhh, don't tell anyone, but the wristbands tipped me off.

I hate you Maroon 5, I hope you enjoy "this love" I'm giving to you.  Leave my radio please (and if you can, bring Hoobastank with you).

I hate this post. I love the Maroon 5 CD even if "This Love" is overplayed. Why don't you pick on Hoobastank's "The Reason"?

Zig, can't say i've heard the song, but i think i know the feeling that you're having...at least you don't work at Blockbuster where we have to listen to Hanson every 15 minutes, or maybe a little Liz Phair "Extraordinary", or better yet Lionel Richie's "Just for you"...if only they let us have weapons.
